Elegant and refined, a daring adventurer and impeccable gentlehippo, from the 1930’s onwards Lord Pothamyus Edward Paddings III, IX Duke of Paddings, became a veritable symbol of international style and class. With his typically British charm, unrivalled taste and surprising energy, the hippopotamus Lord lived a life packed with breathtaking adventures, interspersed with society episodes and events of every type.


Over the century he left his mark alongside important
personalities, from the British Royal family, naturally, to stars of the screen (from Cary Grant to Marylin Monroe, from Grace Kelly to Marcello Mastroianni) and of the music world (from Billie Holiday to Louis Armstrong, through to the young Beatles), as well as protagonists of art and literature (from James Joyce to Eugenio Montale, from Albert Einstein to Pablo Picasso, through to Jean Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir) and the world’s greatest spiritual leaders (from Mahatma Gandhi to Martin Luther King, through to Mother Teresa of Calcutta).

Boundlessly admired by his fans and with attachments to many of the century’s most beautiful cartoon stars and heroines (worth remembering at least is his epoch-making love story with Betty Boop), Lord Paddings seems to have recently returned to the limelight, busy in a new adventure together with his old friend Hans Josef Goodenstein, the noted classical cellist.
